Four years

Around this time four years ago, I was busy planning a wedding and working full-time when I found out very last minute I was being dispatched to Denver for the DNC convention. I was not thrilled. I did not want to travel so close to the wedding and I did not want to run around like a chicken with her head cut off through the hot, traffic-jammed streets of Denver.

But I went, because it was work and that’s what you do. And while I was there, I was still not thrilled. It was hot. It was traffic-jammed. There was so much more I needed/wanted to do at home.

Four years later and the conventions are once again on the horizon. This year, I’m thrilled to have no real idea exactly when or where they’re being held. But even still, something good from Denver did stick with me.

It was the first night of the convention and Hillary Rodham Clinton was giving her speech. We arrived late, and there nearly were no seats open, but we managed to find seats and sit down almost right as she said this:

“My mother was born before women could vote. But in this election my daughter got to vote for her mother for President.”

I got chills then and I got chills again just now.

Four years later, the wedding’s over and all of a sudden I’m a mother now myself. While I have no aspirations AT ALL to run for ANYTHING, let alone PRESIDENT (HAIL NAW), there is something in her words that, I think, resonates with all mothers (and fathers.)

This idea that you’re paving a way for your daughters (and sons) to go above and beyond anything you can imagine. Knowing that with your help and support, they can do anything. And hoping that anything you couldn’t accomplish, for whatever reason, they do accomplish — better, faster, stronger.

Rock on, kid. Mom’s got your back.

Goosebumps. Not only Hilary’s quote, but your words, too. LG is a lucky, lucky lady.

P.S. love you, Hilary! I’m still upset you won’t be our first woman president!

Wow. That quote gave me chills up and down my arms. Nothing against Obama, but I’m proud to say Hillary got my vote in the presidential ptimary.
