My blog made him do it

Weeks ago, Chris and I decided that rather than celebrate Christmas with gifts, our present to each other would be a snowboarding trip to Lake Tahoe next weekend. One of us actually paid attention to this and got ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the other person. Another one of us ignored this deal and got the other person a gift, anyway, claiming, “I wasn’t going to get you anything, but your blog made me do it!”

You see, it was this post from last weekend that prompted Chris to buy me THIS:

A Garmin GPS! Woo! Thanks fella, you’re the best!

I knew this blog would be good for something…

Wedding Pictures: Party Time!

(This follows the Getting Ready, Family & Bridal Party, Ceremony, and Cocktail Reception & Dinner blogs from the My Favorite Wedding Pictures blog series.)

We’re finally here. The holy grail of our wedding pictures. The Party. And what a party it was. As Barney would say, LEG-EN-DAR-Y.

P.S. This does not even begin to scratch the surface on all the party pictures, but I hope you get the idea…It. Was. Awesome.

Check Drew in the wife-beater behind us…
My cousin, shakin her groove thang
Neither of us remembered this picture being taken…
Aaaand then there was a dance-off…

Lessons learned from Mom

Oftentimes, I find myself saying, “It’s like my mom always says…” followed by some gem of advice or insight. Since we all know that no advice is as good as your mom’s, I thought I’d post a few of the best pieces of advice my mom has given me* and ask you, my faithful readers: What great advice has your mom given you?

If one person says you’re an asshole, maybe it’s them; but if everyone says you’re an asshole, it’s probably you.

I thought I’d start with this one because it was sort of the impetus for this blog post. Chris and I were watching something on TV (can’t remember what) and someone was complaining about whatever, people not liking them or something (vague much?) I yelled at the TV, “It’s like my mom always says!” followed by this quote. I have said this countless times throughout my life, whether is was to a friend, co-worker, or myself. When you’ve been slighted by someone and are feeling bad about it, almost nothing is as good as hearing this. Well, except maybe saying it to the asshole’s face…

When applying moisturizer, never rub it down your face/neck, always rub it up and back.

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if there’s any truth to this, but my mom told me long ago that this is how I should apply moisturizer, so this is how I do it. With gravity and all, it does make sense…I mean, why would you want to help push everything down, right? To this day, I cringe when I see someone apply moisturizer wrong. You should try this next time you apply your moisturizer; I bet you’ll just feel younger.

When you find jeans that fit you perfectly, buy two pairs.

This might just be the best advice my mom has ever given me. With my long legs and HUGE ass, I have quite the time finding jeans that fit just right. But, when I do, I always buy two pairs, that way I’ll have a brand new pair after I’ve worn the other ones to death. Of course, this advice extends beyond just jeans and now I’ve been known to buy a great-fitting t-shirt or sweater or tank-top in every single color. I also have a remarkable number of black shirts.

*Thanks for all the great advice, Momma!

A problem

I have this new, annoying, somewhat stressful dilemma in my life these days: I cannot get gas. Err, for my car, that is.

I imagine most people probably have their two “go to” gas stations, one near home and one near work, right? I know when I used to work closer to home, that’s how it was for me.

Well, now I have a rather long trek to work every day, which means that when I run out of gas, I’m probably not near work or home. Which means I have to get off the freeway and find a gas station. Which has become increasingly more difficult. (I’ve been making this commute for well over a year and it wasn’t until very recently that getting gas became such an ordeal, which is why this problem is even more perplexing.)

Two weeks ago, I exited the freeway to get gas, spotted a gas station to my north, drove around to enter the gas station, and ended up back on the freeway. So, since I wasn’t totally out of gas yet, I figured I’d just get off the freeway when I really needed to. Sure enough, the gas light went on and I exited where I COULD HAVE SWORN I’d exited for gas before. BUT THERE WAS NO GAS STATION. So back on the freeway I went, one exit up, and finally found a gas station. This whole ordeal resulted in an awful lot of fretting over something seemingly insignificant.

Not all my gas station dilemmas are as extreme as this one, but I am not kidding when I say that every time I have to get gas, I have some kind of an issue…Driving around aimless in a town I’m not familiar with, scouring for a gas station and hoping I’m not in the ghetto. Or worse, seeing an actual gas station, but not being able to FIND MY WAY IN.

I’m wondering why, all of a sudden, this is happening to me. I have thought about keeping a notebook in my car to jot down where the gas stations are, but really, how sad is that?! I’m also curious (and a little paranoid) as to why in the hell I am the only person who can’t find a gas station RIGHT OFF THE FREEWAY. Suspicious, don’t you think?

Wedding Pictures: Cocktail Reception & Dinner

(This follows the Getting Ready, Family & Bridal Party, and Ceremony blogs from the My Favorite Wedding Pictures blog series.)

Chris and I really wanted the “feel” of our wedding to be as close to a bar/lounge as possible. To that end, we brought in cigars and shots of whiskey, and so no one would need to be rushed to the hospital, a little food. We understand that perhaps not everyone is as adept in the sport of drinking as we are. It’s a muscle, people, and you’ve got to work it out often.

We totally curtsied and bowed after our first dance. Awesome.
Maturity at its finest.

Ah, Timmy.
Haha, look at my face…Boobs look nice though…
Cheers! UNITY SHOT!
Awesome venue.

Ho ho ho and other holly jolly crap

It’s kind of difficult getting into the Christmas spirit when you live in a place where it’s 70 degrees and sunny ALL YEAR LONG (note: this is in no way a complaint.) Hell, it’s even hard for me to remember it’s Christmas. Case in point: This past weekend, Chris and I were mailing our Christmas gifts off to the ‘rents and I looked up and saw a sign that said, 7 Shipping Days Left Until Christmas and I said, “Is it Christmas already?” (Yes, you would think I would have understood that since we were, uhh, mailing Christmas presents, but whatever.)

The past couple days, though, it has been raining cats and dogs, which, aside from denting the shit out of your car, has also put me in the Christmas spirit! So much so that I’ve even been inclined to listen to Christmas music while at work the past three days.

Even better, I’ve been live-streaming 101.5 KGFM from Bakersfield, because they’re the only station I could think of that plays Christmas music the entire month of December. So, in additon to hearing my holiday favorites (and “Feliz Navidad”), I have also gotten to hear all the Bakersfield advertisements. I’ve heard all about the BRAND! NEW! MARRIOTT! and, if you’re in need of a good bakery, I know of one across the street from BHS. (No joke, those were their directions.)

With Chris and I staying San Diego for Christmas this year (which, I’ll be honest, is FINE WITH ME), it has been nice hearing a little bit of “home” every day…Even if that means I come home singing “In by 11, ready at 4, Today Cleaners!”

Wedding Pictures: The Ceremony

(This follows the Getting Ready and Family & Bridal Party blogs from the My Favorite Wedding Pictures blog series.)

There were not a lot of pictures to choose from here, hmm, probably because we were in and out of that ceremony in under ten minutes. Regardless, here are a couple of my favorite shots of the I Dos.

Mom and Dad walking me down the aisle. Basically all three of us trying not to trip, although that would have been quite the sight! See, I can say that now that everything went off without a hitch.
Sigh, so skinny…What happened?! Oh, marriage.
Such a cool picture.
Alright, let’s party!

Knit one, purl two

Here’s the scarf my scarf-buddy Mermanda sent to me as a result of the Girl, Get Your Scarf On! scarf exchange we participated in. Woo! I love scarves! So much so that I’m knitting another one for a [lame] Secret Santa at work. And then one as a Christmas gift to give a friend. And then after that, maybe one [finally] for myself? It’s about time!

Please forgive my hair in this picture. It rained all effing day and apparently, I don’t believe in umbrellas.

Wedding Pictures: Family & Bridal Party

(This follows the Getting Ready blog from the My Favorite Wedding Pictures blog series.)

Here are some of my favorites of the “posed” wedding pictures. No matter how much I hate standing there smiling for FOREVER, I have to admit, it was really difficult to pick my favorites here. I think you’ll notice, though, that even my favorite “posed” shots are more candid. If that’s possible…

Right after the big reveal. It went something like this: I need whiskey. Where is your whiskey? Yeah, you look nice too, GIVE ME SOME WHISKEY.
The Brothers, looking quite dapper
We don’t think we look alike…
Me and my brothers. Well, me and my husband and my brothers. Well, me and my future husband and my brothers, since this picture was taken before it became legal.
The point here was to pose “gangsta.” I don’t do “gangsta,” so instead I did The Robot.
The Christophers.
It’s my wedding and I’ll smile if I want to, smile if I want to…I also don’t do the “serious” look very well.
(Oh, and yes, my friends really are that good looking.)
