Dear Sarah: We have (more) makeup and hair questions for you!

The eye makeup questions just keep rolling in! (And by rolling in, I mean this is the only one. But still. Rolling in!)

Maura asked me how to give the illusion of bigger eyes and at this point, I should laugh laugh laugh at all these makeup questions, because honestly? I have no clue what I’m doing. BUT! I have an advice column to run here, so I’m just going to go with it. (Plus, even though I’m not a trained makeup artist, I do know a thing or two about makeup AND at the very least, I definitely know what looks bad versus what looks good, makeup-wise.)

So! If you’re concerned about making your eyes appear tiny, my first piece of advice is this: Don’t wear a lot of heavy eye makeup. And especially don’t line your eyes all the way around on both the bottom and top lash lines.

As for what to DO, I’d go with a subtle cat-eye eyeliner application, which will give the illusion of your eye extending out further than it actually does. Line the top lid halfway across (not all the way to the inside) and to the bottom lid, apply just a little bit of liner in the corner (to meet up with the subtle cat-eye from the top lid.) Smudge the liner about halfway to the inside with a Q-tip, that way you still get a little color, but without an overwhelming BAM! EYELINER! effect.

Something I have read about in fashion magazines since the beginning of time is to apply a bit of white or light-colored eyeshadow to the inside corners of the eyes, to make it appear as though your eyes are further away from your nose. Does this work? I have no clue, but of course I do it every. Single. Day. (I am a slave to the fashion mags.)

Maura, I hope this helps! Let me know if you need more specific advice here. (I’m finding it’s hard to really get my point across with all these makeup questions without the use of pictures or videos, but I’m hoping that’s just me and that you’re really gleaning benefit from all this!)

Jenn asked what kinds of up-dos I could recommend since she’s sick of rocking the ponytail. Well, Jenn (my fellow BHS alum – Once a Driller, Always a Driller!) here’s my advice to you: Buy a cute hair accessory, put your hair in messy bun on the nape of your neck (I do mine slightly off-center), and stick a cute accessory in it. Like so:

I bought my hair pin (which is actually just a regular pin, attached to my hair with a barrette) from Just Expressive’s Etsy shop. While I’m sure there are other people who make similar pins, I wouldn’t know, because here at Home Sweet Sarah, we’re I’m loyal and Jessica, who makes all the wares at Just Expressive, is a friend of mine, so hers the only shop I’m linking to.

If you’re looking for more a up-do-y up-do, I’ve always loved the look of these from Hair Thursday, although the only time I tried to do one, it was a disaster (in my defense, though, I was running late for a wedding and didn’t have time to fully commit to making one of these looks work, PLUS, since I was going to a wedding, I wanted the up-do to be PERFECT. For everyday, perfect is not necessary. Duh.)

Jenn, let me know if you end up venturing the way of the messy-bun-with-embellishment look or if you perfect one of the Hair Thursday up-dos!

Hey thanks! Sorry I’m so late reading this…I was out of town for 3 weeks. Anywho, I’ll try the messy bun although I don’t even really know how to do that. Do you use bobby pins? I suck at that. Love your friends accessories…gonna get some stuff from her shop. Thanks for answering my question!!! My hair thanks you too!
